A encounter between Andrew Weatherall and a fisherman named Gerard Sheehy is the subject of this short documentary.
“Fail We May, Sail We Must” tells the story of how Sheehy unknowingly inspired the late UK icon, who passed away in 2020 at 56.
Andrew met the fisherman in Cork, Ireland, in 2008 when Sheehy drove Weatherall to the Cork X Southwest Music & Arts Festival.
During a conversation about taking a trawler out to sea in unruly weather, Sheehy had uttered the phrase “fail we may, sail we must,” which went on to become Weatherall’s mantra and one of his signature tattoos.
The ten-minutes short film, currently online on YouTube, also features archival footage of Weatherall, as well as anecdotes from friends and collaborators such as Sean Johnston and Cian Ó Cíobháin. Last year, the latter initiated a search to locate Sheehy, who was unaware of the influence he had on Weatherhall.
